What movie is being reviewed?
Walt Disney Pictures’ live-action adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s 1894 book of similar title, “The Jungle Book”.
What genre is this?
A whole jungle of Adventure, Drama, and Fantasy.
Who’s helming it?
In the director’s seat is actor, filmmaker and comedian Jon Favreau, who is well-known for hits such as “Swingers”, “Chef”, “Avengers: Age of Ultron”, and the “Iron Man” film series.
Who’s starring in it?
The animated animal characters portrayed were an alpha-male wolf Akela (Giancarlo Esposito) and his mate Raksha (Lupita Nyong`o); a black panther known as Bagheera (Ben Kingsley); a fearful tiger named Shere Khan (Idris Elba); a huge, sinister snake named Kaa (Scarlett Johansson); an orangutan “Gigantopithecus” known as King Louie (Christopher Walken); and “one name that will stand above all others: our friend, Baloo the bear (Bill Murray).”
Not to forget, the star attraction — a man cub named Mowgli (Neel Sethi).
The awesome cast also posed with their respective animal characters.
What’s the story about?
Mowgli is a bright-eyed and bushy-tailed young boy or “man cub”, as they termed him, who grows up with a family of wolves and is watched over his companion, Bagheera. He is forced to flee from the jungle, the only home he’s ever known, when a mean tiger, Shere Khan, goes after him. On his way while returning to the man-village with Bagheera, he makes friends with a carefree bear named Baloo — and learns on his journey of self-discovery, the true meaning of life and friendship.
Is the flick any good?
Watching the impressive trailer from over a year ago, our expectations towards the movie are pretty high — plus the fact that we have also watched the famous animated musical film released in 1967 when we were kids.
Now, fast-forward to the year 2016, and we had ants in our pants just waiting for the modern live-action adaption to be screened!
So, in answer to the question — YES, the movie was really good.
For almost two hours, the movie kept us on the edge of our seats as we reflected, laughed and empathized with Mowgli as he navigated his way through deception, lies and his fate as a Man in the deep, dark jungle.
“This is the law of the jungle, as old and as true as the sky…”
The forefront theme of the movie, “Man cub vs law of the jungle”, is fully emphasized on from beginning till the end through Mowgli’s experiences with different animals. Although the plot was not kept entirely the same as the animated film’s — most probably to depict a more credible and true-to-life story — it did throw in a few unexpected twists. We thought some of the scenes stemmed from creative ideas and talents as they were brilliantly played out.
Besides that, the movie gave us aesthetic pleasure despite the heavily-laden CGI effects and the occasional dry dialogue. Although this is his debut film, 12-year-old Neel Sethi gave a truly remarkable performance as Mowgli alongside the convincing-looking animals within the jungle backdrop.
That’s all we would comment for now on the “The Jungle Book” movie, so as to not risk the temptation of giving out any spoilers.
If you have decided to go watch the movie, make sure you bring along a friend or two or even a whole group of them, “for the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack.” Just kidding! But seriously though, make sure you watch it; whether by yourself or with your loved ones!
“I saw a little boy, without a people, bring all the jungle together for the first time.”
